Better than other mineral sunscreens I’ve tried, will buy again
I have a lot of allergies, including fragrance and acrylates, so have to wear mineral sunscreens whether I like it or not. So far this one has been my favorite for efficacy and how it feels to wear. I accept that mineral sunscreens are likely going to need lots of rubbing in and leave a kind of oily and/or white film on skin, so I give myself a lot of time to rub this sunscreen in and let it “dry” while getting ready. As the day goes on, it soaks into my skin and the mild filmy feeling goes away, which does not happen with other mineral sunscreens I have tried. No noticeable white cast after initial rubbing in (I am very fair though). No weird smell which I love, and doesn’t make my skin break out. Have not worn in the pool yet but when my skin gets wet while wearing this, water beads up and rolls off which makes me feel like it’s pretty water resistant. Would probably be hard to get kids to wear as it takes a long time and some pressure to rub in, can’t even get my husband to try it lol

Great Sunscreen
This sunscreen is a new favorite in our house! It goes on smoothly without feeling greasy or heavy, and best of all—it actually works. We spent hours outside and no one got sunburned. It’s gentle enough for my toddler’s sensitive skin and doesn’t cause any breakouts for me either. I also love that it doesn’t have that overwhelming “sunscreen smell” some brands do. Absorbs quickly and leaves little to no white cast. Definitely keeping this stocked for the rest of the summer!

Great sunblock. Won’t burn your eyes!
Let’s begin by acknowledging that all sunscreens advise you to apply it fifteen minutes before exposure. More on this in a moment.Blue LIzard is a mineral based sunscreen, being composed of granulated zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. It has other ingredients, of course, but these are the ones that actually block the sun. The important word here is “block”. Because of these two ingredients, Blue Lizard is actually a physical sun blocker as opposed to other, chemical based, sunscreens which absorb harmful UV rays. This is an important distinction for two reasons.First, the absence of chemicals, primarily avobenzone, means that Blue Lizard will not burn your eyes should your sweat run into them. For me, this is a good thing because it seemed my eyes were always burning with other sunscreens.Second, it will go on white and you will look as though you are wearing a white mask. Remember seeing people on the beach with white lotion protecting their nose? Well, that was zinc oxide and it’s the zinc oxide in Blue Lizard that gives you a white cast when you apply it. I’ve read a few reviews where people are unhappy about this. Well, I think the whiteness is a GOOD THING. Why? Because it absolutely lets you see WHERE you are applying it. As a result, you should not miss any spots. Since I use Blue Lizard exclusively on my face, this is important to me. To minimize the whiteness, remember that a little goes a long way. If you slather it on, the effect will be more pronounced. Once you’re sure you’ve covered all the areas that need covering, spend a little time rubbing it in to lessen the effect. Also, remember that fifteen minutes I mentioned? Apply it fifteen minutes before you go out and you should be fine. Some reviewers have mentioned that they find it greasy. It is a lotion after all, but I don’t find it greasy at all and nowhere near as greasy as chemically based sunscreens. Besides burning my eyes, other sunscreens always left me looking shiny to the point of appearing wet. That’s OK for arms and legs or other exposed areas, but not my face.Of course, you cannot ignore cost. There are other sunscreens with formulations similar to Blue LIzard, but they are all much more expensive. One in particular costs about $23 for 1.5 ozs. That works out to about $15 per ounce. Blue Lizard is the same formulation and is much more cost effective. Finally, I am just getting over a bout of skin cancer on my nose, basal cell carcinoma. When I told my dermatology surgeon I was planning to use Blue Lizard, she said that she was about to recommend it. Good enough for me. That’s the bottom line for all of us. We’re not talking about sunburns, really. We’re talking about getting skin cancer. Believe me, you don’t want to go there. If I look a little pale while wearing a sunscreen that protects my face, then that’s a tiny price to pay.

It’s great stuff!… except when it isn’t.
I actually found out about this stuff when my sister bought a bottle and brought it home as this one was being shipped. 🙄I’m very fair skinned and burn easily. One might say I’m a vampire, though the sight of blood does not excite me. And because of this I’m either covered head to toe 365 a year or drowning myself in sunscreen. Many of them irritate my skin because as luck would have it, nature blessed me with being sensitive, too. To perfumes and whatever else they’re putting in other sunscreen. I can maybe get away with putting some of it on my legs and arms, but never on my face. Anything perfume-y on my face and my eyes swell up and shut tight… I look like I’m turning into a fly, no thank you.I was using Shiseido Sunscreen at one time for all over, until I ran out. It worked very well and I never had an issue. Except it’s rather costly and it’s got a white cast to beat the band. Yeah. I’m talking full-on clown makeup. Still, no burns, no tan. Hallerlujah! So now I’ve got Blue Lizard. And it’s got a white cast, but it’s not terrible. It’s also not permanent. It actually disappears after a few minutes – which kind of left me wondering if I was covered still. I checked… my skin is slick so sunscreen is still on me. If there’s doubt, the gnats return to start annoying me with their presence.I spend upwards of 3 – 5 hours in the pool every day, unless it’s storming. The first hour is walking around in the water vacuuming, so my hands are getting more water exposure than my face is. Rash guards from neck to ankle.Roughly 30 – 45 minutes later, the sunscreen that was on my hands is gone. I believe that the bottle says up to 60 minutes water-resistant (not waterproof! Any sunscreen that claims “waterproof” is being deceitful), and I know you’re supposed to reapply every 80 for this SPF… but there should be something to let consumers know that water exposure will halve the protection time.Because I reapplied religiously, I never got any kind of sun burn or tan. Somehow my hands magically escaped with my reapplying while wet. But after you let the product dry a bit before you return to your activity, it should work fine.I also had zero irritation – EXCEPT when I went underwater after vacuuming and scooping out nature’s little minions for over an hour. This product will run. It will get in your eyes. And it will burn. It doesn’t matter if you applied it dry or with damp hands and then let your face dry. If you start sweating or your face gets wet at all and the water goes into your eyes, it’s picking up product and taking it to your peepers! This happened so many times over the course of two weeks I thought I was going to lose both of my eyes. At first they just felt dry. But every day it got worse and worse. For this reason I have stopped using it on my face and have started using something else that doesn’t run and cause irritation. My eyes were red as fire trucks for over a week, and I have been worshipping the makers of eye drops ever since. The lid changing color to let me know of the UV danger is nice. I don’t know how scientifically accurate that is, but it’s a good focal for me anyway. So, it’s really great stuff as far as I’m concerned. I just know better where to put it now.
